It’s that time of year again. Heading into the New Year of 2010. Typically, this means resolutions that will be broken before the month is over. Weight loss and exercise are big on that list among women and probably a lot of guys too. What’s your plan this year?

I’m a one step at a time kind of woman and when I set goals I really want to reach them. In the past when I’ve said I’m going to lose ten pounds or write a book or get rid of clutter I haven’t hung in there very long with my well intentioned resolutions. We all know about good intentions and where they can lead.

I like setting goals instead of making resolutions. What's the differnce you ask? I think from the definitions below you'll see what I'm getting at. To me the idea of making a resolution is that you decide you are going to do something, whereas a goal is a shorter trip in my mind (progress in increments).

a resolve or determination: to make a firm resolution to do something

the result or achievement toward which effort is directed; aim; end

When I was doing my Christmas shopping a couple weeks ago I saw this book
and bought it for myself. I knew I liked Julia Cameron and her work. I knew I planned on getting back to the gym after a long bout of pneumonia and I knew other plans hadn't worked well for me.

So can this:

really lead to less pounds?

I've just read the prologue to Cameron's book and I've decided to give it a whirl.
I want to get back to the gym and my hubby bought me a special 12 week program I wanted on getting healthy. I want to lose some weight and get my cholesterol level down a bit. And I want to write another book. I'm aiming at four pages a day. But one note of caution here everyone. I have not read this book yet and as a licensed social worker I encourage you to remember this book is written by a very creative woman, but not a nutritionist or therapist. If you have a serious eating disorder please consult a specialist.

So what's your plan? Goal? or resolution? Care to share?

Smiles and Blessings,

  1. Hmmm...I don't make resolutions either. I also set goals and set REACHABLE goals. I create milestones and once I hit the mielstone, I celebrate (maybe a little retail therapy) and I create another milestone thus getting me closer to my big yearly goal.
This year I am polishing a MS that has created alot of interest and send it off in the best possible shape, but my BIG goal is to nail down an agent. It makes me want to hide under the covers when I think of the big goal...eeck!
    Happy New Year!

  2. Hi Tonya,
Nice to see you here. Reachable goals. Yes! That's what keeps me moving forward and I was fortunate enough to get an agent this past summer. You can do it. Just keep it in your plan. Come out from under those covers and find the agent meant to help you succeed. I wonder what kind of retail shopping you'll do after you get your agent? :)
    Happy New Year!

  3. Hey, Jill! I don't usually make resolutions, but this year I'm hoping to lose some weight, especially all the weight I've gained just in the last few months! And we're doing something a church, our pastor calls it Transformation something. Sorry, I forget! Anyway, I want to be a more positive, less critical person, so I'll be working on that!

  4. Hi Melanie,
The program at your church sounds fascinating. Let me know what you all will be doing. I love this time of year because although I don't make resolutions anymore it always feels like a fresh start. And may we all lose the weight we want to shed! Happy New Year!

  5. Great post! Hmmm. My NY resolution, other than the general ones of following God's voice and will and staying in the Word and out of the Holy Spirit's way?

Rising and shining around 5:30 like I used to so those three or four or five pages will get captured on paper.

Stop by my blog every now and again, and while you're doin' it, have a Happy New Year!

  6. Hey Patti,
I heard on a radio show the other day that our most creative time of day is 10:04pm. How do you like those stats? I wonder how they figured that out?

I've never been a morning person. Wish I was, but I'm going to try Jim Bell's method of the fast 350. He gets up and writes 350 words every morning to get him on the write(:))track. Okay, since I'm not an early bird and have to go into work maybe I'll try the fast 250 to get me warmed up.

    Happy New Year!

  7. Hi Jill -

Funny cartoon! I must try that method. :)

I'm looking forward to getting rid of all the candy and cookies. Of course, that means I won't get serious about losing weight until about...oh, say March. I do go to the gym, which keeps things from getting out of control.

Keep us updated on how you're progressing.

    Susan :)

  8. Hi Susan,
I hear you about not having all the candy, etc. out of the house till March. And when I go back to work on Monday there is always food being brought into the college. It will be a challenge, no doubt about it. I'm just hoping I can at least write more and use my writing as a distraction when the cravings hit hard. I love that cartoon too. I'd love to try that at the doctors office. :)

  9. I made a point of making no Christmas cookies this year that didn't go with me and then stay at someone else's house!

still, over the last 4-5 months I've gained lbs and spending up to 14 hrs a day at a keyboard doesn't help.

I'm going to get a new gel seat for my bike and start that for one thing (when weather permits which is like four months away around here!)

Talk about a blog post title that catches people's attention!!

  10. Hey Deb,
I'm glad I caught your eye.:) I think I need a gel seat for my computer chair! I'm really hoping to make some small changes, write more, and eat less and then hopefully drop some pounds. I do know that a year at anything can make a big difference. Have a great week.

  11. Hey Jilly, I need to lose weight. I have the exercise equipment and hubby just buckled and bought me a NordicTrak incline trainer. It was the $999 vice $2799 price that finally allowed me to talk him into it. He couldn't figure out why the price cut. I figured it was post-Christmas. The truth = it took hubby and the 2 boys over an hour to get it through the door. And it was still in pieces! But I can't wait for him to put it together for me. I can't use it until my ribs heal, anyway so it's a waiting game up here. :)

    Good post.

  12. That's fabulous Anita. Take it easy with those ribs though. You don't want to get her hurt. Thanks for visiting. Let's see if Nordic Trak + writing + drinking water will = the new and improved Anita. Keep me posted, kiddo. Together we'll beat these pounds.

  13. Goals, rewards, and never give up. That's what keeps me going.

  14. Hey Mary,
Let's see it's January 14th and I haven't lost a pound. Actually I had lost 2 last week and the little brats should up on the scale again. So it's time to push through.

I think this is about the time in the New Year when people give up. But like you said Mary, never give up. I'm just going to take a step back, evaluate what I've been doing and go at it again. I think it's just as hard to get published as it is to lose weight, but it's all about tenacity. Stick too it, don't give up. Achieving those goals is write around the corner.:)
